The distinctively American Mormon denomination of Christianity was founded by Joseph Smith, who was born in Vermont in 1805, grew up in New York, published the Book of Mormon there, moved his church first to Ohio, then to Missouri, and, finally, to Illinois, where he was killed in 1844.
They've had a long afternoon of visiting new members of the Hyde Park ward, with lessons from the Book of Mormon to discuss, gossip to catch up on, theological questions to answer and prayers to offer.
Punctuated with singing, passages from the Book of Mormon, and caricatured voices that range from a female Mormon psychotherapist to an offensive rendition of a Japanese businessman, the play is alternately funny and sad--and at its best moments, both.
