[French, from Provençal bouiabaisso : boui, imperative of bouie, to boil (from Latin bullre, from bulla, bubble) + abaisso, imperative of abeissa, to lower (from Vulgar Latin *abbassire : Latin ad-, ad- + Medieval Latin bassus, low).]
