As the invaders approach the island, Dalan, a Druid and Brehon who interprets the code of law, is desperately trying to strike a truce between Brocan, king of the Fir-Bolg, and Cecht, king of the Danaan. This scheme would abolish the native Irish brehon judges, who were thought to be pawns of their clan chiefs, as well as drastically limit the judicial powers enjoyed by the Anglo-Irish nobility - this latter result to be achieved by dividing Ireland into shires, each (as in England) responsible for the local enforcement of the common law and under its protection. ``Seeds that are sown do mature, and so you find the flourishing bloom on the Irish at the end of this century,'' said Scanlon, a lawyer and publicity director for the Brehon Law Society, an organization for lawyers of Irish heritage. |
