The "Epilogue" focuses on his exile to Buru, his memoir Nyanyi Sunyi Seorang Bisu (1995), and Indonesia's modern history. He spent most of the Suharto era behind bars without trial, including fourteen years at the Buru Island Prison Colony. Conducting field research in Beijing during the summer of 1995, I was told that "changtong buru duantong" (long pain is worse than short pain), meaning that it would be better to resolve the issue of Taiwan earlier rather than later. |
