Five large-scale integrated CCS projects are now operating in North America, Europe and North Africa.
But progress in developing CCS in the UK needs to be "greatly accelerated" if it is to deliver major emissions cuts, as well as jobs and economic opportunities.
The Hatfield scheme has been judged as the third best in Europe by the Commission, beating off rival UK applications for money for CCS development at Longannet and a proposed new power station at Kingsnorth.
