The compound that is formed when inhaled carbon monoxide combines with hemoglobin, binding more tightly than oxygen and rendering the hemoglobin incapable of transporting oxygen.

We investigated the link between the adverse effects of CO on the respiratory system using COHb as a marker for chronic CO exposure.
The COHb levels observed late in the day posed a public health hazard.
However, CO was not associated with increased ectopic beats at COHb of 3% or 5% (Maynard and Waller 1999).
