The AUC used certain convivirs as fronts to collect security payments from local businesses to fund the AUC's illegal activities.
As governor of Antioquia between 1995 and 1997, Uribe encouraged the creation of campesino security cooperatives known as CONVIVIR that became vigilante groups with ties to the army and evolved into the AUC.
In 1997 the military court exonerated General Velandia, who became a `legal adviser' to CONVIVIR (which translates as `Live Together'), an association of rural vigilante groups supplying local `intelligence' to the army.
