forty years ago, novelist and scientist CP Snow propounded the notion that Western society is fundamentally split between two cultures, the arts and the sciences, neither side listening to the other.
Then, like an actor tackling a long soliloquy, he fills his lungs (ironic for a would-be ex-smoker) and words fly out of him as if he'd discovered the secret of circular breathing: on tyranny, racism, sharks, rats, dogs, cats, flies, DTs, childhood, sex, murder, friendship, death, the power of fiction, lesbian fantasies, Harold Pinter (his temper and, more surprisingly, his gentleness), CP Snow, Simon Callow, Alan Bates, Tom Stoppard, Nathan Lane and more.
More than 50 years ago, CP Snow, novelist, boffin and man about the corridors of power, put the "two cultures" question, as if science was somehow qualitatively different from the arts.
