Surely other houses must be planned for these hills, in styles of equally questionable authenticity--and even if the style were "authentic Cape Dutch," would that make it proper to the place? Designed some 30 years ago, it reflects a concern then shared by a number of other architects: to create a regional vernacular rooted in historic Cape Dutch architecture, yet thoroughly modern. In their work they maintained the continuity of the Cape Dutch tradition, but added new ideas, elements and refinement. |
