The so-called "classical" definition, used by Swedish botanist Carl von Linne (1707-78) and others, defined species as "a group of organisms in which individuals are members of the species if they sufficiently conform to certain fixed properties". While the subject is important, the length of the essay (twenty-four pages), with its overly detailed list of descriptions of plants which made their way into the work of Carl von Linne, is in need of the editorial scissors. |
