About 20 years before his death, conductor Carlo Maria Giulini gave up conducting opera in theaters because, among other things, the producers insisted upon doing things that Giulini felt were not good for the music or faithful to the composers' intentions.
It was considered controversial at the time, largely because the conductor, the great Carlo Maria Giulini, insisted on emphasising the dramatic and psychological integrity of the score rather than treating it as a vocal display piece.
