A city of eastern Sicily, Italy on the Gulf of Catania, an inlet of the Ionian Sea. Founded in the eighth century b.c., Catania was a flourishing Greek community and later a Roman colony. Population: 302,000.

During the opening ceremony, Defence Minister Costas Papacostas and CISM President, Brigadier General Dr Gianni Gola will honour Cypriot champion in high-jump Kyriacos Ioannou who secured his first bronze medal in international competitions during the third Armed Olympiad in Catania, Italy, in 2003.
