In the end, the plague seems to have reached the Champs Elysées in Paris, threatening a sequel with subtitles. In this year's race which began in the Vend two weeks ago, has been traversing the great Alpine passes this past week, is now in the Pyrenees and finishes in the Champs Elysées on Sunday 24 July - he has no one's record to beat but his own. Not every reader will be able to boast of an epiphany when he stumbles on a paving stone or hears the chink of a spoon on a saucer, but all but the most fortunate will identify with the onset of illness in a public place, as when Marcel's grandmother suffers an attack in the Champs Elysées. |
