| A part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus library system, Parallel Press began publishing poetry chapbooks in 1999 and has so far published twenty-nine chapbooks, one of the most recent of which is "Encore: More of Parallel Press Poets", an anthology edited by Elisabeth R. I usually retch whenever I see a rainbow anything, but Dean Sameshima's use of rainbow pride here triggered glee: Tearing at the semes of Baker's handmade prototype, Sameshima allows the sign of craft to remain only in the rainbow tinting of his images scanned from underground 1950s and '60s physical-culture-turned-sugary-porn chapbooks like Butch that, picturing "young men at play" as nude or pouch-clad cowboys, gymnasts, wrestlers, footballers, and artists, sexed the postal system. And I must add that in each of the fourteen chapbooks so far, Blue Scarab Press has proven its point: There are, indeed, many gifted writers and poets living in the Southeast Idaho area. |
