We stayed at the amazing Chautauqua resort , built around one of the state's last remaining chautauquas, a wooden hall built in the late-1800s and designed to bring education to small rural communities.
It speaks to the influence wielded by the New York community and the hundreds of regional Chautauquas that sprang up in its wake, serving a mix of intellectual and religious fare to a nation hungry for learning.
The Chautauquas flourished, despite some conflicts--their African-American members were in danger when they toured areas rife with KKK members and sympathizers--filling a much-needed role until the Great Depression, when the rise of radio and movies eclipsed them.
