A comprehensive reform movement in China initiated by Mao Zedong in 1965 to eliminate counterrevolutionary elements in the country's institutions and leadership. It was characterized by political zealotry, purges of intellectuals, and social and economic chaos.

The films competing for the 30,000-dollar prize include Hong Kong director Rita Hui's "Dead Slowly," a feature on analysing human relations, Chinese movie actor-turned-director Jiang Wenli's "Lan" which features a female gymnast whose parents were imprisoned during China's Cultural Revolution, and Japanese director Kazuya Shiraishi's "Lost Paradise in Tokyo" revolving around two brothers who decide to live together with a prostitute.
