chlo·ro·plast  (klôr-plst, klr-) also chlo·ro·plas·tid (klôr-plstd, klr-)
n.
A chlorophyll-containing plastid found in algal and green plant cells.

chloro·plastic (-plstk) adj.

chloroplast [ˈklɔːrəʊˌplæst]
n
(Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Botany) a plastid containing chlorophyll and other pigments, occurring in plants and algae that carry out photosynthesis
chloroplastic  adj

chloroplast  (klôr-plst)
A plastid in the cells of green plants and green algae that contains chlorophylls and carotenoid pigments and creates glucose through photosynthesis. In plants, chloroplasts are usually disk-shaped and can reorient themselves in the cell to vary their exposure to sunlight. Chloroplasts contain the saclike membranes known as thylakoids, which contain the chlorophyll and are arranged in stacklike structures known as grana. Besides conducting photosynthesis, plant chloroplasts store starch and are involved in amino acid synthesis. Like mitochondria, chloroplasts have their own DNA that is different from the DNA in the nucleus, and chloroplasts are therefore believed to have evolved from symbiont bacteria, their DNA being a remnant of their past existence as independent organisms. Upon digestion, the algae's light-harvesting factories--the chloroplasts--are sequestered in specialized cells in the slug's gut (there's even a name for this chloroplast theft: kleptoplasty).
Dr Brisson suspected that a protein family he has studied for years, called the "Whirlies" might be important to protect against mutations in plant cells - specifically in the chloroplast - the engine of photosynthesis that allows plants to transform carbon dioxide into sugar and expel the oxygen we breathe.
The objectives of this research are to study the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying plants adaptation and survival to increasing UV-rich environment by investigating and comparing the oxidative stress responses of Arabidopsis thaliana plants and their callus tissues to increasing UVR and by investigating the photosynthetic activities of isolated chloroplasts from UVR-treated plants.
