British physicist who with Ernest Walton succeeded in splitting the atom (1931). They shared a 1951 Nobel Prize for their contributions to nuclear physics.

Byline: Nick Hartland RIVER Taff rower Emma Cockcroft made it four national long distance titles in a row when she raced to victory with fellow Cardiff University student Cat Kay at the 374-boat Pairs Head in London.
