A river, 354 km (220 mi) long, of northwest Mississippi flowing generally south to the Tallahatchie River.

When the rail line was built through the area in 1856, citizens of a small village by the very English name of Elm Grove uprooted their shops, stores, and homes and moved them close to the railroad, taking in the process the name of the nearby Coldwater River.
In fact, the Coldwater River Nature Trail System is "the most extensive and scenic trail net work in northeast Mississippi," according to Hiking Mississippi: A Guide to Trails and Natural Areas by Helen McGinnis.
