n.1.(Zool.) A genus of carnivorous Dinosauria found in the Jurassic formation with a slender body, and remarkable for having several birdlike features. It reached a length of 30 inches when adult.

A Dalmatian strains eagerly at the leash before a small, frightened looking Compsognathus.
Peter Wellnhofer of the Bavarian State Collection of Paleontology and Historical Geology in Munich reports in the June 24 SCIENCE that he has identified a new Archaeopteryx specimen, which had been found many years ago and misidentified as the dinousaur Compsognathus.
