Although the use of formal assessment instruments is often a component of custody-related mental health evaluations (Ackerman, 2006), they are not mandatory (Association of Family and Conciliation Courts [AFCC], 2006), and concerns have been raised about whether they are appropriate in child custody cases (Emery, Otto, & O'Donohue, 2005; O'Donohue & Bradley, 1999; Tippins & Wittman, 2005).
