This work can probably be a foundation for better understanding high-temperature superconductors and can lead to new forms of unconventional superconductivity," says Tuson Park, coauthor of the study and a condensed matter physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
To answer such questions, the authors have put together a 12- year panel database for 465 condensed matter physicists working in the French public research organization CNRS, and have specified and estimated a simple econometric model for both "productivity" and "quality" measured respectively by the number of publications per scientist per year and by the corresponding average citation impact of these publications.
Since 1987, when materials that superconduct at temperatures as high as minus 150 degrees Celsius were discovered, condensed matter physicists have been trying to figure out what makes them work.
