Congregation of the Holy Cross

(R. C. Ch.) a community of lay brothers and priests, in France and the United States, engaged chiefly in teaching and manual Labor. Originally called Brethren of St. Joseph. The Sisters of the Holy Cross engage in similar work.

1984 With the loss of juridical control over Notre Dame College by both the Congregation of the Holy Cross and the Catholic diocese of Fort Wayne-Grand Bend in 1967, Hesburgh moved to put his university more clearly on the secular, agnostic side of American politics.
Neither the bishop nor the Congregation of the Holy Cross had authority to veto the invitation to Obama, but apparently the Superior General of the order would not have done so if he could.
