convoy commodore

A naval officer, or master of one of the ships in a convoy, designated to command the convoy, subject to the orders of the officer in tactical command. If no surface escort is present, the convoy commodore takes entire command.

His main job was liaising with convoy commodores - a key role which he fulfilled with great success.
Admiral Rowley Conwy, of Bodruddan, was brought out of naval retirement at the start of the war and acted as convoy commodore during the Battle of the Atlantic, protecting Merchant Navy ships such as I served on.
These meetings were also attended by ships' masters and their chief engineers, the convoy commodore and representatives of the sea and air escorts.
