The book says far Southwestern New Mexico has a few coral snakes and poisonous Gila monster lizards, but the state has no native copperheads or cottonmouth water moccasins, venomous snakes found in the Southeast.
Venomous snakes include the diamondback rattlesnake, which has diamond-shaped body markings bordered in yellow and a tail rattle; the canebrake rattlesnake, gray-brown or pink-beige in color with dark bands across the body and an orange stripe down the back; the pygmy rattlesnake, gray with round reddish-orange spots and a buzzing rattle; and the cottonmouth water moccasin, olive brown or black with a dark band from the eye to the jaw.
Snakes, including the copperhead, cottonmouth water moccasin, eastern coral snake, and several varieties of rattlesnakes all have potentially deadly bites.
