Council of Europe

An organization established in 1949 to achieve greater European unity, matters of national defense being excluded. Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden were original members. Greece, Iceland and Turkey joined later in 1949, then West Germany (1951), Austria (1956), Cyprus (1961), Switzerland (1963), and Malta (1965). (Greece withdrew in 1969.)
