A city of north-central France west-southwest of Paris. It is best known for its magnificent palace, built by Louis XIV in the mid-17th century, where the treaty ending World War I was signed in 1919. Population: 86,400.

A royal chateau, the court of Versailles was once the controlling political power in France, its history connected to famous French royalty such as Louis XIV.
In that sense - and this is not intended as a personal attack on your columnist but rather a debating argument - is it not like Marie Antoinette and her courtiers playing at shepherdesses in the lavish and grandiose court of Versailles in pre-revolutionary 18th-century France?
Also on the all-French composers program is a new pas de deux evoking 19th-century Paris by Christopher Stowell, and two company premieres: Stowell's Zais, inspired by the court of Versailles, and Robbins' iconic Afternoon of a Faun to Debussy.
