A mild contagious skin disease of cattle, usually affecting the udder, that is caused by a virus and characterized by the eruption of a pustular rash. When the virus is transmitted to humans, as by vaccination, it can confer immunity to smallpox. Also called vaccinia.

Hailed as historic legislation by Colorado public health leaders, the new law recognizes that public health has evolved over time to deal with more than just the diseases that century ago, such as cow pox and cholera.
Some of the diseases are almost unheard of today, including tuberculosis, foot and mouth disease, cow pox and Texas fever.
Prof Begon says more work is needed to understand hidden diseases such as the bubonic plague, cow pox or certain kinds of TB, which are endemic in the rodent population.
