Played with unalloyed creepiness yet effective poignancy by Jackie Earle Haley (last seen by most as a kid in the original ``Bad News Bears'' and ``Breaking Away''), just-paroled Ronnie McGorvey lives with his fiercely protective mom, May (a great Phyllis Somerville).
There's suspense, sorcery, plenty of Gothic creepiness, and young protagonists who make more sense than their venal, materialistic elders.
Jamie captures the seriousness but also the creepiness of the event by zooming in on the winner's proud and often sublimely tranquil expression, then panning the small, slightly disinterested crowd of spectators and dignitaries, among them National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, whose party uses Joan's martyrdom as a staple of its xenophobic propaganda.
