DNA fingerprint
n.
An individual's unique sequence of DNA base pairs, determined by exposing a sample of the person's DNA to molecular probes. DNA fingerprints are often used as evidence in criminal law cases. Also called genetic fingerprint.

DNA fingerprinting
The use of a sample of DNA to determine the identity of a person within a certain probability. DNA fingerprinting is done by analyzing repeating patterns of base pairs in DNA sequences that are known to vary greatly among individuals.

And yesterday, the man who discovered DNA fingerprinting 25 years ago added his voice to the demands hat the gover nment should think again about retaining samples.
DNA fingerprinting helps identify the source of biological samples found at crime scenes with virtually 100 per cent precision.
According to reports, during the tests conducted by the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics in Hyderabad, it was noticed that vaginal swabs drawn from teenage murder victim Aarushi were substituted with samples taken from an unidentified woman, who has no connection with the double murder case which took place on May 15, 2008.
