Belgian Roman Catholic missionary who ministered to the leper colony on Molokai (1873-1889), where he contracted leprosy and died.

The one probably best known in the West is the Belgian priest Damien de Veuster ((1840-1889) who volunteered to look after lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.
In 1936 a similar controversy took place when the remains of the famed Blessed Father Damien de Veuster, a victim of leprosy himself, were removed from Kalaupapa and reinterred in his home country of Belgium.
Damien de Veuster was the Belgian priest who helped the sick in the region from 1873 until he himself succumbed to disease in 1889.
