Aided by his great Swedish friend and collaborator, Daniel Solander, and backed by huge wealth based on estates in Lincolnshire, Banks became the pivot on which revolved the entire British botanical establishment.
One of his most famous students, Daniel Solander, got a job at the British Museum and was subsequently employed by Joseph Banks to travel with him on Captain Cook's first voyage to the Pacific on the Endeavour, and together they collected many specimens of previously unknown plants.
The characters - botanists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, and the first Polynesian to visit Britain, Omai - feature in a painting at Whitby's Captain Cook Museum.
