The largest city and former capital of Tanzania, in the eastern part of the country on an arm of the Indian Ocean. It was founded in 1862 by the sultan of Zanzibar. The name means "haven of peace." Population: 2,330,000.

Byline: BY TREVOR PEAKE OPEN champion Padraig Harrington is playing one of his favourite courses, Royal Dar Es Salam in Morocco, in preparation for next week at Valderrama in Spain when he bids to retain the European Tour order of merit that he won last year.
Trevor Grundy, a journalist, author and broadcaster, who worked in the Central, Eastern and Southern African regions from 1966 to 1996, including the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salam (1968-1972), told the London-based Catholic Herald that such honour should not be given to a man "who filled Tanzanian jails with political prisoners and espoused quasi-Soviet policies that turned his country into an 'aid junky'.
