While Deaf individuals do not regard deafness as an impairment, they are often at a disadvantage to hearing people because everyday society tends to be structured around, and for, hearing individuals.
It can be felt a decision should not be made for a child as it is a choice the deaf individual should make once an adult when they are old enough to understand.
The movie features interviews with prominent deaf individuals, including Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin and Gallaudet University president emeritus I.
