1. Falling off or shed at a specific season or stage of growth: deciduous antlers; deciduous leaves; deciduous teeth.
2. Shedding or losing foliage at the end of the growing season: deciduous trees.
3. Not lasting; ephemeral.

It would be interesting to know if deciduousness in pteridophytes is associated with an active recovery of nutrients or assimilates from the leaves, which would represent a distinct advantage over mesomorphic species that loose all tissue once the leaves are too dry.
