Well before he became Fed chairman, Professor Ben Bernanke insisted that the Fed could stop a deflationary spiral, but the means of doing so-involving cheaper money and even helping to fund the Federal Budget--would put further downward pressure on the dollar.
In the space of a few years they have managed to throw a basically strong economy into the dangerous deflationary spiral we see today.
Other economic advisers are pressing for a further cut in interest rates, concerned that the lesson of Japan in the 1990s--of doing too little, too late until a deflationary spiral took hold--should serve as a warning to Bush.
