Vatican II did not 'forgive' Jews of the so-called crime of deicide as some newspaper headlines proclaimed. Since the 1938 draft reasserted the hoary deicide charge as grounds for "the social separation of the Jews from the rest of humanity," one can reasonably conclude that the sentences Phayer cites would have been as ineffective as the earlier papal attempts to deter anti-Jewish violence. The film deliberately depicted Christianity as fundamentally Jewish in its roots, while laying blame for deicide squarely at the feet of all mankind, and not, as some charged, all Jews. |
