| Since the process of deinstitutionalisation in the 1980's, this group has experienced a lack of resources as well as debilitating social stigma, as they struggle to find their way in a community which can be rejecting and unsupportive. As a consequence of the deinstitutionalisation of people with disabilities and the ageing of the population in the past 25 years, the number of young people fulfilling the role of carer for a relative has increased. Increased autonomy and choice, the very essence of community living, and the founding premise of deinstitutionalisation, is often lacking. |
