Years ago, I wrote about another vessel regulated by the Coast Guard, a ferry that crosses the wide mouth of the Delaware Bay, noting that it had a sign reading, "Life Boats this way," that pointed its 700 passengers to two boats with a capacity of 25 persons each. Utsch's lies at the entrance to Cape May Canal--not a canal in the usual sense, but a marine shortcut that makes Cape May an island and also allows cruising boats to slip behind the ugly, extensive shoals southwest of the cape itself and avoid the big-ship traffic nexus at the mouth of Delaware Bay. In September 1920, an extraordinary maritime drama took place in the Atlantic off Delaware Bay. |
