May 26: Five prominent Palestinian prisoners, representing Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, issue a National Conciliation Document calling for the creation of a Palestinian state within pre-1967 borders, alongside Israel, and asserting the right of Palestinian refugees to return to lands within Israel proper.
The PNF, as it took shape in 1974, included representatives of the Jordanian Communist Party, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Fatah, and the Ba'th Party, as well as labor, student, professional, and women's groups.
The groups, which included the militant Islamic movement Hamas and two extreme leftist factions, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, boycotted the Palestinian elections held under the accords last year.
