A January 1905 son of Wartnaby-Gleneva, Dendraspis was bred near Carlisle by Thomas Graham and purchased form him by the Dennises for pounds 62/10/- after he ran-up for a sapling stake at Plumpton when 14 months old.
An above-average winner of the Altcar Classic, Dendraspis also annexed the 32-runner Netherby and Hornby Castle Cups, and was undefeated in 14 courses during the 1908/1909 season.
