But another reason is that, until well into the 1980s, most bikes were awful - cheap, heavy things with side-pull brakes that constantly dragged and were all but useless in rain; hub gears that required constant adjustment or derailleur gears with levers awkwardly placed on the downtube and which no one ever properly explained to us. These bicycles are without derailleur gears, hub gearing or other methods for varying the gear ratio of the bicycle. Derailleur gears were allowed for the first time, despite race director HenriDesgrange insisting they were only needed by the over 45s. |
