n.1.(Biochem.) the process of testing samples of mixtures which are active in a screening process, so as to recognize and eliminate from consideration those active substances already studied; - a stage subsequent to the preliminary screening in the process of discovery of new pharmacologically active substances in mixtures of natural products; - also called counterscreening. High priority "leads," such as APP-069 with a selective index (cytoprotection/cytotoxicity) of 250 that compares extremely well with AZT, will be subjected to bioassay guided fractionation, chemical structure elucidation and dereplication.
Bristol-Myers Squibb will conduct biological testing of these extracts in its proprietary assays and may select extracts for dereplication, purification, isolation and structure elucidation, based on results in its screening assays.
