Irving's first major work came in 1809 with A History of New York, penned under the memorable nom de plume Diedrich Knickerbocker.
He raised up memories of strange characters, of queer goings on, of local stories and of funny incidents and Irving's thoughts turned back to his writing - for in 1809 he had brought out The History of New York by Diedrich Knickerbocker.
KNICKERBOCKER GLORY"This elaborate dessert was inspired by Diedrich Knickerbocker, a name dreamt up by Washington Irving for the fictitious author of his History Of New York which was subsequently used to describe descendants of the original Dutch settlers.
