Any of several plants of the genus Dieffenbachia native to tropical America, having stout, jointed stems and large, variegated leaves and widely cultivated as an indoor plant. Also called dumb cane, dumb plant.

As the David Viscott of horticulture on KCRW's amazingly popular The Garden Show, Singer has been tackling such botanical brainteasers since 1982, advising a loyal following of flora fans distraught over their dieffenbachia or befuddled by their bougainvillea.
Among those closely related to the voodoo lily -- and most familiar to North American houseplant collectors -- are members of the genuses Dieffenbachia, Philodendron and Monstera.
Members of this family include the Calla Lily, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Anthuriums, Dieffenbachia and Philodendrons.
