What this enzyme does is to catalyze the formation of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide by the dismutation of superoxide, a negative ion consisting of two oxygen atoms and a free electron, and hence a very powerful free radical.
In mitochondrial respiration chain, superoxide anion is generated at the site of complex I and III followed by dismutation to hydrogen peroxide which is consequently converted to hydroxyl radical in the presence of metal ions (Boveris, 1984).
SOD is an enzyme responsible for dismutation of highly reactive superoxide radicals to [H.
