My Life in CIA may not proceed strictly from Oulipo principles--like Perec's infamous e-less novel, La Disparition (translated into English as A Void)--yet there are convulsive Oulipian flourishes. The poem's overture therefore achieves something like Mallarme's idea of a disparition elocutoire in the way it moves expressive force into language and withdraws it from the speaking subject, usually so empowered in contemporary ethnic poetry. Georges Perec, for example, became an Oulipo hero when he wrote the novel La Disparition (1969) without using the letter e. |
