Previous archaeological interpretations of the role of north Australian mounds in past Aboriginal subsistence and settlement strategies include domiculture (Cribb 1996; Cribb et al 1988), and as seasonal wet season camps in locations elevated above the surrounding landscape with optimal access to a variety of seasonal resources (Bailey 1975; Baker 1981; Meehan 1988 and 1991; Peterson 1973).
