A team led by Glen Hartman, USDA Agricultural Research Scientist at the University of Illinois, has identified a single dominant gene that expresses soybean aphid resistance.
Because it is a single dominant gene with identified DNA markers, it can be readily introduced into susceptible varieties using marker-assisted selection.
The ability of siRNAs to knock down disease-causing proteins coded by dominant genes offers hope for new and effective treatment of diseases that other genetic engineering strategies--such as gene replacement therapy--can not address.
