1. The oldest and simplest of the three main orders of classical Greek architecture, characterized by heavy fluted columns with plain, saucer-shaped capitals and no base.
2. A Roman order of similar design but with the addition of a base.

Doric columns set around the front doors of British homes are an all too common crime against home decorating.
Funded by a combination of private donation and local government, Museum Station was given a new facelift that turned its series of once plain-tiled load-bearing columns into reflections of ROM artifacts-a First Nation's house post, the Egyptian god Osiris, replicas of imperial Chinese columns, and Greek Doric columns.
Solid Doric columns from a castle in Scotland support the front porches, and the balcony railing is carved to resemble English lace.
